One of the reasons why Marxism was originally founded in the 19th century was because it was impossible to see suffering, starvation, and plague in rural areas before then. Only burgeoning urban areas were proximal enough so that one could use propaganda to sell anecdotal stories that represented fringe cases that actually weren't important. 100 dead farmers isn't as much of a tear jerker sob story as one dead child in a city.
