5 Guys doesn't count as fast food. :)

Correct, 5 guys is a dine-in. Although with a name like that it could be a gay porn.

You've grown a lot over the short time you've been in this community. I would just like to reach out and congratulate you on being introspective and willing to challenge your point of view and that of the "tribe" that surrounds you.

Regardless of whether we agree or disagree on topics, I salute you for being willing to examine issues as an individual and make a decision for yourself, instead of parroting what an echo-chamber says.

Thanks, but dont expect me to become a full-fledged liberal! ;)

Honestly, I was quite strongly against Kaepernick and the kneeling protests in the NFL back in 2017. When I saw the video of the George Floyd killing and then saw a protester the next day holding a sign "this is why we kneel", it really got me thinking. Doesnt mean I'm for abolishing PDs or that I stopped being wary about the methods and ideology of the BLM movement, but I had no other choice than to acknowledge that these protesters have a damn good point.

In other fast food news, has anybody else tried Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich? I got it and it was a normal chicken sandwich with a spicy sauce on it. I was skeptical but fuck I'd take a kick in the balls to learn how to make that spicy sauce. It was amaze-balls.

Most criticism of liberal points that I see isn't honest, especially in America. It relies on denying the problem exists, or denying that it can be fixed, or whatever. Take Climate Change. We literally knew it was a possibility in 1890, knew it was happening and that we were the cause by 1970, and it only got into the public attention in the 2000's and was outright denied by one of our major parties until like 2015. This should have never been an issue of "if", because the "if" was solved literally 50 years ago. It should have been a question of "how", and since we wasted 40 years on a non-existent "if" the "how" became "drastic action now, or just accept our fate".

These riots are another example of that exact mentality.

I have to disagree on the climate change analogy. The 'if' might not have been in question since the 70s, but the "how bad will it actually get" was up in the air far longer. Also, the huge obstacle with climate change is that there still exist no "proper" solutions - after all those decades, the only solution science has to offer still is "yup, we'll all gonna have to sacrifice significant chunks of our standard of living". Getting through with that kind of message is obviously far more difficult than an uncontroversial demand like "the police shouldnt murder someone in plain daylight and get away with it".

On a sidenote, the issue of police violence imho would have blown over far earlier if there had been phones with cameras in the 80s or 90s...

As Ive said many times, the reason we would now need to take significant chunks out of our standard of living is because we waited so long. If we have made the significant investment into Renewables research in the 70s like was being advised we wouldn't have this problem to begin with because we would have transitioned off of fossil fuels a few decades ago.

I don't expect you to switch sides. This isn't about you posting something that supports my viewpoint. This is about how you were a blind stooge for your PoV and have now expressed an opinion contrary to the echo-chamber nonsense you used to spout. I'd imagine we will still disagree on a number of topics. But it does mean that I will value your opinions more, knowing that you are willing to reflect on them, match them against your personal values, and then post your own thoughts, instead of blindly spewing "ORANGE MAN GOOD", which is what you used to do. You may still agree with Trump--but at least your stance on this issue shows that you're willing to think critically about a topic BEFORE you make up your mind.

Abolishing police is stupid. Anything that happens during these protests in terms of police abolition will get rolled back after it ends. But the lasting change to police practice that this may bring could be invaluable to our most vulnerable citizens.

And this once again gets back to what I was saying: although research on renewables has been well-funded for at least 15 years, we still havent made meaningful progress toward finding a technological replacement for fossils. And there's zero guarantee that we'll achieve the necessary technological breakthrough over the next 1-2 decades either.

But we've already had this discussion numerous times without comign to an agreement - let's not derail this thread with it.

If you think we haven't made significant progress towards replacing fossil fuels then I don't think you appreciate the advances we've made in the past few years. We crossed the boundary to where solar is cheaper than coal about 5 years ago and private investment in solar has absolutely fucking exploded and coal power plants, even despite coal getting cheaper to mine with automation and receiving a greater subsidy in the United States, have been closing down by the dozens every year. I drove back to my moms house this week, in the middle of bum fuck Missouri, and I saw several houses with installed solar panels.

Once you cross the "economic line" where it is more profitable to go renewable you end up in runaway investment that results in much cheaper products. We just hit that 5 years ago with solar and we are seeing it now. We are virtually guaranteed to be getting the majority of our electricity from renewable in the next 30 years.
