the problem with caucuses is their huge time investment and inaccessibility, which causes them to skew heavily towards the super-engaged party activist crowd, which in turn skews young, white, college-educated and very liberal on the Democratic side. they disadvantage candidates like Biden with a less white, less engaged and more working-class base.

Activists are the people who get a candidate elected. They run the phone banks, stuff the envelopes, go door to door, etc. Why should a party invite the disinterested public to tell them who they should campaign for?

not in a binary choice.

if we had ONLY caucuses more people would be registered with a party. would be nice to force some people to pick a side, and prevent stuff like in 2008 when large numbers of GOP voters tossed votes to HRC fearing the black vote. even back then she was looked at as unelectable.

primary season voting overall is very low turnout.

They now plan (sic!) to release the Iowa results around 4pm CT, or 5pm ET. The SOTU address is scheduled to take place at around 9pm ET.

Markets really likes this caucus fuck up

Suddenly the day when votes are literally hacked doesn’t seem that far off now

Most of our voting apparatus have garbage security so I won't be the least bit surprised if in 20 years it comes out that a foreign entity changed millions of votes

i frankly wouldn't be suprised to hear a CNN pundit say, "I have to say, with President Trump and Putin getting away with their election interference unscathed we're only going to see more and more election interference from people emboldened by their actions."

So, I'm with Santara on this one but that's b/c I'm a political nerd. A caucus seems REALLY fun and it's a great way to discuss politics with your community. It's also reasonably close to ranked choice voting so that's an added benefit. I personally think that primaries should be closed (only party members can vote) but that's another topic of discussion.
I know that some people just want to have primaries on a single day, but if you had that, you basically give the nomination to Clinton, Biden, Jeb, etc. every single time. Honestly, this isn't really a problem with the Iowa caucus, it's just with reporting information. If it was a primary, you'd still have issues b/c each precinct needs to report their results. Granted, it'd be easier to report the results, but you'd still have a delay due to technology failing.

Nate Silver is pretty annoyed that his model got screwed:

Honestly, it seems like the person who got screwed the most in this is Mayor Pete. If he really did get the most delegates in Iowa, that's a Cinderella story that got overshadowed by this colossal fuck up. Imagine what would have happened if the news of Obama's Iowa win didn't make it until 18 hours later.
