The baker losing business isnt a concern, people who wont bake blacks cakes would lise their business even of they beat a lawsuit and nobody would bat an eye. Boycott is a valid means of social influence.

That there are people filing lawsuits isnt evidence of a group wanting mandatory acceptance. Not being discriminated against by public businesses still falls under tolerance, not acceptance.

He's not losing business because of a boycott, but as a result of the exercise of state power.

He is more than willing to serve gay customers, he does not bake gay wedding cakes.

The commission ruled against similar complaints involving businesses refusing to bake anti-sodomy bible verses, so it's fair to say that this has everything to do with hostility against religion.

How did the state cause him to lose business?

Cakes dont have sexual orientation, there's no such thing as a gay wedding cake, he's unwilling to make wedding cakes for gays.

They won the lawsuit, didn't they?

If people don't want to shop with discriminatory businesses that is also perfectly acceptable

He had to discontinue making all wedding cakes in order to avoid having to comply with the commission's ruling. That represented 40% of his business.

He's unwilling to make wedding cakes for gay weddings. When a woman called and asked for the same thing (wedding cake for a gay wedding) he told her the same thing.

This is about the type of cake he'll make, and what he'll write on it, not who the purchaser is.

Except he will make the same cake for a straight wedding, meaning that he will provide different Services depending on who asks

Replace gay couple with interracial couple and there isn't a chance in hell you wouldn't call that discrimination based on race, is clearly unwilling to offer certain services for people depending on sexual orientation

The key point of contention is not whether it's discrimination, it's whether religious freedom for the baker or freedom from discrimination for the gay customer takes precedence. Which is why I, personally, think that it makes a difference if a gay couple wants an ordinary, innocuous wedding cake, or if they order one with giant, squirting, pulsating cake-dildos on top.

The point of what we are talking about is tolerance versus acceptance. In my mind public business not refusing a group still falls under tolerance.

Still, I dont see a way a few frivolous lawsuits is a larger movement to mandate acceptance.

If I were to order a cake celebrating gay marriage as a straight man, I would be declined.

In that instance, are my rights being violated? Are gay rights being violated?
