Donald Trump has imposed 10% tariffs on Denmark, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, and Norway in response to the Greenland dispute (i.e. they wont give him something that they do not own and they are trying to protect their child from the pdf*). The EU has not responded with any meaningful economic countermeasures. Why? because it needs all 27 countries to agree, and they do not all agree. Instead, Europe’s reaction has been limited to weak diplomatic statements and weaker symbolic gestures. This lack of response is consistent with the EU’s institutional weakness, its (spineless) dependence on the United States, and its deep reluctance to confront an American president directly.
In the next six months, it is expected that Trump will escalate the tariffs to 25% noting the EU is highly unlikely to take actions that satisfy the U.S. demands. Based on Trump’s pattern of behavior and his rhetoric, this escalation is pretty much guaranteed. The EU can not respond quickly (or at all). All they can do is hope that time will resolve the issue for them, because they cant resolve it.
*We are allowed to play with words now, noting he has by his words and actions, declared himself the enemy of the free world.
