You aren't making an argument against the text, beyond "I should be able to understand the messages of the Bible clearly without any study, even though it was written thousands of years ago, in a different language, in different societies and situations".

...take your sighs elsewhere sparky , we don't need you having a case of the vapors here .

You know what? Fuck it.

You want to know why the majority of rational and critical-thinking people can't stand the bible-thumping and religiously blind types like you? Arrogance.

Stop and consider this for moment: "We are created in God's image and his son died for our sins".

Fuck all of the other planets; fuck all of the other star systems; fuck all of the other galaxies; fuck all the other animals and species that exist and have existed on this little rock; and fuck all of the possible lifeforms that may exist out there in the grand expanse of space. No, only we humans are special enough to be created in God's image. Only we humans are worthy of God's only son.

That is the epitome of arrogance, human arrogance.

That line of thinking is tantamount to claiming the Earth is the center of the universe. You might as well don a robe on your head and chastise others for refusing the will of Allah.

I'm making the argument that legitimate scholars will have different opinions, as well as those who study for themselves. There will be differences in how it is interpreted by everyone. Claiming to have properly understood it over anyone else is arrogant at best. The simple explanation is we interpret it to fit our views. Were that not the case, the millions of self proclaimed Christians, or any religious faction for that matter, would not differ so much from each other.

The basic doctrines of the church(trinity, salvation by grace through faith, etc) are agreed upon. There's issues that scholars differ on, but why does that matter?

That's silly. When a literature professor claims to understand a certain book more than his students, is he arrogant? No, he has studied the text more than they have. He has better reasons to believe what he believes.

If I wasn't concerned with the truth, and simply wanted to interpret the Bible to fit my own views, why would I bother to study it? Why would any Christian? Stupid argument.

Dude, what you just said includes the parts Thor and Vereor pointed out. A timeless classic wouldn't generate that much controversy. So far it seems to be a book that only a select few understand and then they act as the filters through which the less educated receive the knowledge. People are then basically believing in something they don't understand.

The typical devoted Christian understands the basic doctrines of the faith. It's a lifetime of education when you are a Christian.

It's not racist if you're not black apparently...

Should really collect up all the 'monkey boy', 'hindu' and 'brown skinned' bullshit posts and forward them to a moderator tbh. The kind of racist shit he says to you really isn't acceptable and he definitely deserves a short holiday and some warn for it.

nah, overt racism from conservative white folks is kind of what i expect so i'm not surprised

also you forget that the moderators and site owner lean heavily towards the right so there's really no point engaging them about this

i've had sigs and avs off for about 5 years now but i'm guessing tcock still has that obama muslim sig?

It is stupid to continue studying it, that's what I'm getting at. How many more years must folks study ancient stories, because that's really all they are, to still not have a common, accepted understanding? I refuse to believe anyone alive today has a better understanding than someone a hundred years ago. Or two hundred years ago. Because folks in those times like now still focused on the teachings that fit their views.

I was channel surfing about a week ago and passed by The History Channel. Those fuckers are literally "professors" and getting paid to pontificate about how ancient Roman-Greco mythological beasts were the product of ancient alien breeding experiments or some shit. I'm sure these people "studied" hard and got good grades, as well.

Accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior is the most humbling experience you can have. You accept that God has complete dominion over you, that your life should be devoted to Him, and you can no longer live on your own terms. It's pride(or arrogance) which gets in the way of completely accepting God in your heart.

There is a common, accepted understanding on most doctrine.

You refuse to believe that because you won't study the Bible. You're basically talking out of your ass for no reason.
