I don't know if that's necessarily accurate: he's been trying to use national politics to further increase the profitability of his brand for 3 decades. He's switched parties 6 times since 1987 all in an effort to con morons into supporting him; he's been in politics for a really long time, he's just incredibly bad at it other than bribing Republican officials to do what he wants.
