Well, I think there's layers to your question, that are both historical and present-day. Did Hamas come to power by a coup? No. But when was the last time a vote took place in Gaza? 2006, where I believe Hamas won 44% of the total vote, and did not win a majority in any individual region of Gaza. Subsequently, they utilized violence and murder to cement their power, and there has not been an election since. Very few of Gaza's present-day population voted during this election--let alone for Hamas, especially since nearly 50% of Gaza's population wasn't even alive during the 2006 election.
