forcing the dialogue does indeed hurt your case if you're the one in the weaker position.
forcing the dialogue as the one in the driver's seat, as is the case for the U.S. in the NATO, is a rude but efficient way of getting things done.

there are simply smarter ways of raising awareness for an issue than by shoving it down the throats of those persons you need to convince of your cause. all this approach achieves is that they get triggered and seal up to the issue completely.

if you want others to change, start with persuading efforts, not with accusations.

when it comes to NATO, europe is depending on the US and their contribution to the NATO for their own safety. if the US withdraws from the NATO, europe is fucked and has to invest a lot more than "just" 2% of its gdp into the military to make up for it.
therefore, the US - if they are willing to be rude and essentially blackmal their allies - can force their will onto the european countries on this issue. they are in a position of strength and dont have to persuade. they should, and I think that they should treat their european allies well, but they have other options than persuasion.

the kneeling protests are different in that the protesting nfl players are in the weaker position and cant force their will onto the white club owners/the white majority society - they HAVE to persuade, and in that situation, what I wrote in my 2nd post applies.
