Honestly, this description of Crooks supports the "lone wolf nutcase"-theory over the "hyperpartisan lone wolf" or the "deep state plant" theories.
I feel its all square peg round hole
what we know is this guy tried to assassinate Trump, is young, had some depression or whatever, and has no more virulent expressions of liberalism than half the people I know in real life, hell I see far more militant posts on facebook from folks I know are harmless.
The most likely explanation is this kid had more of the mentality of a school shooter. Many attempted presidential assassins have been similar, motivated more by infamy or mental illness than politics- not to the exclusion of politics, but not solely borne of a desire to influence policy. More of a "My life sucks and I want to go out with a bang" than a "I want to stop the next hitler". Still, we've seen countless examples of mentally ill or militant / self destructive personalities being drawn into political extremism even if their own opinions are half baked at best. The Trump supporter who sent nonfunctional pipe bombs and had a van decked out in Trump stickers- he was incoherent and didn't even understand Trump's policies, but everyone who knew him said he'd always been nuts and just watched onto a cause. Say this guy shared some of the general liberal antipathy towards Trump and fatalist opinions on a 2nd Trump presidency, and that was enough of a cause for an already psychotic person to latch onto and give them an excuse. Maybe if politics were civil and boring in America this guy would have wound up taking hostages at a Waffle House or converted to islam and blown himself up at a christmas parade.
I'm just trying to call it like I see it, there's not a long history of antifa radicalism or a manifesto calling Trump the antichrist, there's no history of far-left militantism. This guy probably had leftwing views and opposed Trump and could justify to himself murdering Trump even if he knew it was self-serving for infamy
