The comparison with Obama's numbers is apples to oranges because turnout in American elections has settled on a generally higher level since 2018.
Once all the outstanding ballots are counted (mostly on the West Coast), Trump will have gotten around 2.5 million more votes than in 2024 while Kamala got "just" 7m less than Biden.

Such a result is perfectly plausible once you account for the political environment of both elections.
In 2020, we were in the midst of the worst public health crisis in a century and Trump dropped the ball on it. He also oversaw the worst race riots in decades.
In 2024, it was the Biden/Harris admin which had presided over ordinary Americans' worst loss of purchasing power in decades, the highest volume of illegal immigration in history and the outbreak of two major wars.

Biden in 2020 had political tailwind while Harris in 2024 had to fight against strong political headwinds.
