Candidates can only do so much to stem the tide of macro-trends. For literally decades (I think going back to at least the 60s), and all across the industrialized world, working-class voters have been trending toward right-wing parties while college-educated voters have been trending toward liberal or lefty parties. This trend existed long before Trump, he simply supercharged it whereas Romney, four years earlier, had slowed it down a little bit.

However, the Romney coalition had a 1.5% disadvantage in the EC (difference between the margin in the popular vote and the tipping point state) while the Trump coalition in 2020 had a 3.8% edge in spite of very similar topline numbers. (51.1% vs 47.2% in 2012; 51.3% vs 46.9% in 2020). So despite treading water in terms of the popular vote, the reshuffling of the coalitions has brought Republicans a whooping 5.1% closer to winning the presidency.

- the reputation loss was NOT due to "less interventionist" foreign policy (which was always just an empty promise, in reality he didn't even bring the troops he withdrew from the kurds home, most of them were re-deployed somewhere else in the middle east), he actually manoeuvred america to the brink of military conflict with iran out of spite for his predecessor, and broadly supported the genocide saudi-arabia is committing in yemen. the loss of reputation came due to unilaterally breaking carefully negotiated agreements, cozying up to dictators, and attacking allies. you're deluding yourself pretending it was anti-interventionism, lol.

- so because the GOP has been undermining them for decades that somehow means trump doing so is NOT something he does against the interest of his base? weird "logic".
