I get not bulk buying for some things since a lot of foods dont freeze well and spoil, but for things like tp, rice, dish soap, etc that dont spoil, don't cost too much, anddont take up a lot of space I dont get it. Guess its just people generally being bad at math.
Toilet paper actually takes up a lot of space if you really stockpile on it. Which is also the reason why toilet paper is running out right now: TP uses up more space per unit than almost an other item in a store, like e.g. canned soup, bags of chips or toothpaste.
Since its consumption is normally very steady, stores have only few units of TP in store at any given moment, relative to most other goods. A store might have 30 packs of TP, but 100 packs of chips or processed food of a certain type (e.g. canned soup) etc. Hence, when demand suddenly spikes just a little bit, the TP shelves look empty very soon. This, in turn, then prompts customers to think that TP is running out, so now everyone starts panic buying it.
