If people don't live in reality there's a problem. How can you get to the root of that problem and resolve it if you don't figure out where the problem resides? How can you figure out how the problem resides if you offer no counter narrative? Nobody who seeks to come to a discussion or debate stage is seeking to be personally attacked for an opinion. They're looking to state what they believe to be true. It's your job, as the person debating them, to show them why their opinion is false, and to articulate it in a way, and present the relevant facts in such a way, that it truly does come across as the common sense you claim.
