why would the slinky fall faster as the top travels downward?

as you can see from the video the coils are spread farther at the top (higher tension) and closer nearer the bottom (lower tension). if anything in a density model this would suggest it should fall faster near the top then slow down as the tension is relieved coil by coil. you can slow the video down to .25 speed and try and calculate this if you'd like, then apply gravity to the top portion where the tension is relieved to make a comparison.

but just as a question do you accept that both in a gravity and density model that the bottom would stay until the top meets it? because if not then i agree, you should be done here.
