I just went through this whole thread trying to find your post in which you specify that these women in that study were asked to rate men on a percentile-basis - there is none. Neither does it say anything about percentile ranking in the caption of the pic you've linked. And it wouldnt even make sense anyway. How many of the girls on these dating sites even know what a percentile is?

You still seem unable to wrap your head around the idea that these women from this little (unscientific) experiment were rating the dudes not relative to each other, but on an absolute scale. And on this absolute scale, the big majority of the guys' profile pics don't do much for the girls. That's really all there is to it.

Yes, because it depends on the distribution. This is why median is almost always a better metric than mean. Suppose we have a population of 10. 8 beta cucks are rated as 1s and 2 alphas are 10s. The average rating would be (8*1 + 2*10)/10. Based on the above distribution, 80% of men would be below average.

Women have to rate attractiveness more selectively, because there are a number of other factors to consider, and the consequence of failure is great. Men can afford to rate women on a normal distribution, because the absolute attractiveness is relatively more important.

That's what I've been trying to explain to him all the time: he assumes that the female perception of male attractiveness should follow a normal distribution without giving any proper reasoning, and then takes the fact that reality doesn't conform to his unrealistic assumption as proof for his point.


Outside of scientific discourse, there is no consensus on whether the word "average" refers to the arithmetic mean or the median. In everyday language, the two are conflated all the time.


To be fair, he was talking about a percentile-based rating, which implies that he was indeed referring to the median when talking about the "average".
