The Democratic thesis was simple, a combination of changing demographics in the South-West (i.e. Hispanics) and increased traction in the suburbs would rob the Romney-Bush coalition of key electoral votes and deliver a permanent electoral majority. Trump ran as a law and order candidate who opposed open borders and cultural leftism. That is largely what voters see. The incompetence of his administration has clearly hurt him, but his base for the most part lacks an alternative. They don't want a good loser who plays loyal opposition. They're not aligned with Democratic financial priorities, they're opposed to the modern left's racial politics, and they see their culture ridiculed and demonized in a coastal dominated media industry.
