The title of this thread conflates the two groups (rioters and protesters) as if they had one singular purpose or 'end goal', as you state.

Handcuffs' post describes the protesters' goal accurately.

The rioters and looters are just opportunistic assholes with no end goal except to enrich themselves.

There's probably some overlap, and I imagine just how much overlap between the two groups will be the subject of much debate in the coming weeks and months.
