I think his populist message of getting the economy going, renegotiating trade deals, paired with being an incredibly blunt outsider overwhelmed the constant harping on his past bigoted statements.
This really is bewildering. I know many Trump supporters and I'm in an area of the country where he is popular, but I never thought his support was so widespread.
Or maybe, just maybe, those hispanics don't self identify as mexican wall jumpers and don't feel threatened by someone who takes the distinction of illegal vs legal immigrants and haven't bought into attempts to smear him as a bigot, and have already familiarized themselves with him previously because of the immense popularity of the WWE among hispanics and a cultural appreciation for braggadocio showmanship that goes with it. When they see Trump talking about grabbing women by the pussy or clumsily imitating a palsy, they don't get their knickers in a twist and spit their tea all over their crumpets over the egregious faux pas, they just see someone acting like they would and identify with him. Perhaps a condescending democratic campaign that takes their minority vote for granted and completely lost public trust gave trump an opening for picking up the the disaffected who jumped ship, not walls.
