By focusing on that aspect of the issue (violence against a certain group) in stead of just the issue (violence), you promote the categorization of different groups within a society.
We are all individuals with rights, no matter our skincolor, gender, sexuality, ... By focusing on one aspect of a group of individuals, you make that aspect an issue.
By focusing on the fact that (in this situation) a transgendered person was beaten, you lose sight of the plain fact that a person was beaten.
I disagree, we don't lose sight of the plain fact that a person was beaten, as we take notice of the fact that a person was beaten
because they are transgendered and were using the bathroom that they ought be free to use. It brings light to a greater issue we face within society, which is transphobia.
Why something happens is just as important as what actually happened. For instance, if we just take 'a person was beaten', then we're not really telling the whole story, nor are we addressing the major issue here.
