Also, interesting enough, russia went through a massive modernization program for all its nuclear weapons between 2011-2020. Spent almost a hundred billion and even came up with some fancy-dancy ones like the avangard and status-6. Meanwhile, america is still field testing their minutemen3s from the 60s, as the sentinel program is still a ways away.(they do have air launched nukes from the f35s, which is their saving grace currently)Russia doesnt fuck around with their SSBNs and their nukes because they understand the importance of second-strike capabilities against nato.

To me this north Korean threat still seems like a media narrative spin than something tangible. Have there been any confirmed Korean troops in Ukraine? We know western mercenaries are in Ukraine because there have been dozens that have been captured/killed, etc, but is there any real evidence that North Koreans are on any Ukrainian territory?

It's possible Kim deployed them to be support i.e. logistics and maybe for training purposes (there's no training like real world actual war) but so far i haven't seen much engagement from them based on battleground footage/reports.

To use this as pretext to escalate seems premature and the logic is shaky. Again, we have/had hundreds if not thousands of mercenaries join Ukraine, in what rules for thee but not for me fashion would the other side be forbidden of also having mercs?

A safe position to be sure. any time North Korea is involved there's a near 100% chance its because a boogeyman is needed. North Korea has zero interest in global ambitions, they just want to hold onto domestic control in perpetuity.
