Trump needed a better debate coach. Joe Biden sat on the stage last time around and staked his honesty on him having nothing to do with his son's business dealings, and his son never having earned a cent in China. It should have been a slam dunk, bonus points for mentioning how his campaign manager was orchestrating the hoax the entire time. Instead we got vague accusations that Joe could simply deny. Really unfocused by Trump.
CNN said their pollsters in real time showed both candidates losing whenever they went on the negative bent and I'm inclined to believe it. Trump could get up and try to connect strings on a whiteboard to say how Biden took money from China and Ukraine and profiteered off the war and it would go over with the average American about the same as it does with
If you can't put it on a 2 by 6 notecard and you can't hammer it in the first 10 minutes of the debate or make a snappy one-liner about it, its just going to thud.
Clearly Trump's strength is when he's saying Biden's tack on immigration and inflation and social programs and even some on foreign policy. He knew to strike with targeted phrases like illegal immigrants coming to take black and hispanic jobs. Biden actually had some real lay-ups from the moderators and chances to capitalize on abortion and maybe medicare but in the former Trump was clearly prepped and well rehearsed and coherent ('bring it back to states', 'endorse the exceptions', etc) and Biden just failed to injure him, while the latter with medicare is where biden just powered down as snipa says. Nobody is going to remember anything Biden said about policy in this entire debate. And lord knows he fumbled whatever he was trying to defuse about the illegal immigrant murder case, you can't just bring it up and say Trump attended the funeral and then falter and move on, you need to actually
defuse the bomb not say "there's a bomb", good job macguyver.
So yeah Trump definitely wasn't perfect here, and he can't resist being petty small hands trumpster when it comes to a slapfight, but holy shit you know Biden is on the wrong foot when the bickering kicks in and Trump is the one to say they should straighten up and act presidential
