It's a tricky thing to understand, and people mess it up all the time, but that's not at all what's happening. You are producing more (mostly!) as a result of invested capital and technological progress, not because the value of your labor has gone up. And you're not working more, you're working a lot less! The number of hours Americans work per week has gone down, not up. And with respect to federal income tax at least, the middle class certainly doesn't shoulder a majority of the burden. The rich are paying, because that's where the income is and we live in a country with progressive tax brackets.
