how/why wouldnt he possibly "bother us in the future"?
im failing to understand why a 1for1 is acceptable given the huge difference in the severity of the crimes committed. i wonder what i would have to do to earn the title of merchant of death. (actually, id rather not)
He's not a leader or a zealot or a terrorist or a martyr. He was an arms dealer who operated outside the public eye and won't be able to resume arms dealing. Geopolitically, it does zero harm to us to have him out of prison. What difference does it make to us if he retires to the countryside of Russia and lives quietly? This contrasts to high profile prisoner swaps like in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where Hamas leaders might be out organizing new attacks the next month.
Honestly in terms of our geopolitical interests, the deal only really negatively impacts our image and standing. If the takeaway is that Joe Biden is an ineffectual leader who can be bullied and will blink whenever Putin stares him down and push comes to shove, then lmao message was already sent loud and clear so I'm not sure we can botch it any worse than it already is. So Biden looks weaker on a world stage after this, so what, at least in actual outcomes its probably a net positive
