Imho, the parties' positions on most issues have diverged so much over the past 10-15 years that meaningful compromise has become impossible and total gridlock is inevitable whenever there is a split government. Some notable exceptions like infrastructure or chips exist, but they are few and far between.
imho there's plenty of middle ground that the american public agrees on, but it ranges from a lot of hard work to stuff that impacts them, so they pretend that trans bathrooms, jan 6th, and other fringe polarized issues are the future of america as an excuse.
veterans issues, regulating large finance markets on issues like massively shorting, actual effective infrastructure, etc.
