I am of the vote to keep it a secret as well. I don't think the social fabric is strong enough to endure the existential weight of this knowledge.

Great topic. Going to give this one some thought

Make it public, for various reasons:

1.: It's preposterous to assume that your team is so much smarter than everyone else that it is categorically impossible to come up with a solution, just because you and your team could not. Maybe there is a solution after all, say moving earth out of the way with massive rockets or something like that.
2.: It gives humanity time to start colonizing space or, at least, gather all human knowledge and transmit it into outer space via signals or probes, hoping that a different intelligent species might one day receive it.
3.: It allows humanity to celebrate one last big party and stop worrying about a lot of problems, e.g. climate change, the eroding pension system and so on. Children could stop going to school and enjoy life, etc. Shy people would get a chance to reveal their feelings to their crush, and so on and forth.


I have to admit that there are some counterarguments, though. Not even just crime, but more importantly production and services stopping. If everyone knew that life ends in 3 years, what would prevent a factory worker who has some savings from just stopping to go to work? What would keep cleaners looking after hotel rooms, service personnel operating the rides in theme parks, plumbers repairing broken pipes and so on? Modern society hinges on a lot of people doing their job and the knowledge of impending doom would take away most incentives from these people.

Technically it's extremely hard to absolutely reject any chance of survival: Even a rogue black hole or supernovae would have survivors - if they have the time to build up some extra-terrestrial base in the hole of a safe place -

I guess it would better to inform others, for the simple reason that things have to go forward.
