Just saw an outbound flight.

Time is currently 11:30 PM, so that would explain low outbound totals.

are they journalists? government officials? otherwise, why would they be able to tell and openly discuss what's going on, given china's strict censorship and surveillance programs?

Maybe there is a purge right now of the Shanghai Clique.
Two have been sentence to death but will be commuted to life imprisonment this week.

So maybe outbound flights are down to prevent some people from leaving.

There at least a few thousand China Chinese watching and donating on Youtube.

Everyone uses VPN if they want to watch Youtube in China.
Censorship is not censorship in China.

They only check on you and censor you if you are considered a threat to the party or the country.
It's like Patriot Act and PRISM program China style.
