W're very clearly moving to a cashless society anyway, North America is typically a few steps behind but usually follows suit with other developed first world countries. Cash's time in the sun is dwindling. You take a trip over to Iceland or Sweden and it's like looking at the future.
Most cards already categorize all your purchases anyway in a half ass attempt to add "Insights" to your online banking experience (really they're just collecting data). I see adding one layer deeper into sub categories as a non-issue. The article's silly example of purchasing a safe and it being a costly item which may look like you made a big fun purchase and putting you on a target list is ridiculous. Is homeland security is going to raid your house I am quite certain they will further inquire with the vendor first what the actual purchase was and see the details of the purchase before they come kicking down your door.
your gun purchases can already be tracked, pretty sure even in America the guns serial number is linked to the person who bought it?
Cash makes it more difficult sure but the serial number is still there
Even before with credit cards, it could already be tracked
