Words are just tools to express concepts. The concepts don't change when the words change. Adding new and contradictory-but-similar definitions to words doesn't invalidate the concepts they used to express or support the new concept. Sex and gender have been synonyms for most of the history of both words, now gender is being redefined and there's no reason to expect sex won't be similarly redefined.
From what it looks like, there seems to be a new concept: A dude thinks he is a girl. And that concept needs a word. Well maybe it isnt even new. There probably were always cases where the brain and body develops differently, however rare that case is (1 in 1000000?). But now there seems to exist an idea, that literally every person can be whatever it want if you let it grow up differently (@experts in the gender field: pls correct me if im wrong in my understanding). From how i see it: Yea sure, a kid will grow up differently if you grow him up differently. There are personality disorders which can be induced by wrong parental methods. Im not saying that someone with a mismatch in gender and sex has a personality disorder, but to me it looks like a heavy identity crisis. Being gay was called a sexual orientation, but considering the concept of gender there is literally no orientation at all. And will that kid, which gets into such an identity crisis, ever be happy (or kill himself at the age of 30)? And since certain languages have only one single word for sex (which gets redefined to include the concept of gender), the kid cant even know which sex he is.

They are not two different terms though. A very small pool of thoughts control almost 100% of what you see from the US. They try to force the idea that (insert all the preceding gobbledygook) is a popular belief in the US, where in the real world most normal American citizens outright reject this.
This is not, and I repeat this is not how most Americans feel.
This trend is liked by younger academics in my country. Academics around 27yrs and younger like that concept for whatever reason and argue that such concepts decrease the wage gap between woman and man. Yes, i know how that sounds, but thats reality now.
