When we filter this story through the myopic, conceited and uniquely american lens of the gun control debate as so many on twitter are, this would be an example of a highly motivated individual with enough competency to create his own weapon and/or ammunition. Which I've always pointed out is nothing compared to the mass murder potential of a subaru, let alone a real bomb.
