My point isn't, "covid isn't real". Rather, it is, "we shouldn't believe everything we see on TV".

Yeah but you're using covid as an example, where the numbers they're saying relate to what i saw in real life. as compared to swine flu there they were clearly off.

What you are arguing for is a (very stupid) version of direct realism. I.e. it only exists if I can see it. You're dumbing it down to "be more skeptical if you can't see it", but fundamentally it's the same.

It has nothing to do with whether I can see it or not. I am saying that there are things that are not realistically verifiable. Seriously, tell me. How would you verify the national covid death rates as one person?

There is no reason to distrust national death rates from Covid.

Is it because you are naive and overly trusting? You trust these rates because you don't see why people would lie about them. I bet this is your mindset.

You aren't an expert who's going to have a nuanced opinion on this versus that method of counting deaths.

This has nothing to do with me not being an expert or being able to determine manner of death. It has everything to do with, even if I could prove the cause of death is covid, there is simply no way for me to count all the dead bodies to get a tally for the national covid death rates.

So that's when you accept it as true because the numbers being off by any significant margin requires positing an insane nation-wide conspiracy theory.

So you accept the numbers as true despite not being able to verify them. Got it.

Imagine sitting around all day doubting every single thing you don't personally understand or have first hand experience with.

I don't think you can read.

I said nothing about not being able to personally understand or not having first hand experience with. I said, something that is not possible to verify as an average person.

Holy shit I just realized i'm not a rocket scientist and therefore any rocketry I see on tv I must doubt it! Earth is flat cause that's all I can see from my perspective!

Please read my OP again. I never said to doubt everything single thing you see on TV. I said be doubtful, be skeptical, and hear someone out who has a different idea than TV.

is it possible to verify 100%? not for the average joe.

can u estimate based on the sample size of your immediate area? yes.

i dont care if the news is 10k off, as long as we're talking about 190k and 200k deaths for example.

Average person can't verify anything outside of the range of their senses without technical or 3rd party help. When I go inside an enclosed room I can't verify the outside is still there for example.

Your line of reasoning makes anything besides first hand experience something to doubt which leads to just doubting everything.

And maybe that's the healthy thing to do? That we should try to be a little skeptical about things that other people told us? People that we don't know personally and therefore don't know if they are trustworthy or not. You know, people like news anchors and TV executives?

I think if you listened to your teachers instead of being "skeptical," you'd be much smarter.

Can you verify the temperature of the surface of the moon? No.
Therefore the science and news is "lying"

There is something to be said about doubting one's teachers.

Anyway, I never said to doubt every single thing someone else has ever said to one. I do say that we should not trust people like news anchors and TV executives, simply because we don't know if these people are trustworthy or not. And we should not take something as true until we have verified it. I can't believe you have a problem with this.

Please read my OP again. I clearly stated I am not saying they are lying. I said, they could be lying.

God I can't believe the number of people in this thread who got so offended by what I said.
