Can anyone derive any real meaning from this? Every time I try and analyze, I think I make some sense of it then keep going and lose the plot.

This is a trick that a bunch of types of entertainment pull. They create an entire universe of history to learn about. Men get a lot of their fulfillment from investing a lot of time and effort into things. I don't think the messaging has a particular point here. Although the creator of the band had a very traumatic childhood - and themes of trauma and apocalypse seem to saturate his works. He was also kind of a r*****ed communist.
