I really don't think he's a Trump cultist, or even particularly fond of Trump or trumpism in general. Imho, he would feel a lot more comfortable with where the GOP was in 2012 or so, but he's biting his tongue in favor of his overt ambition for higher office.
At its core, his criticism is correct though. How conservative an elected official is considered to be should hinge more on the policy positions they support than on the rhetoric they deploy. Folks like Kinzinger or even Cheney did not become less conservative just because they turned on Trump, so if they are criticized for their stance, it should be framed in terms of damaging the GOP brand or disrupting party unity, rather than a simplistic "XYZ is not a true conservative".
Crenshaw is indeed a hack. he likes to use a tactic over and over where he says things like "we can have that conversation" implying it would take too long for the format, then offer bland overviews that dont say anything. i think the truth is he doesnt have a big grasp on policy and is like a watered down version of Ted Cruz who pretend to have massively principled and studied stances but is actually a shill for whomever will keep him in office.
on the OP i think this is a 2024 or 2028 attempt to grab a cabinet spot if the GOP wins. wherein he can present himself as a varied aspect of the GOP willing to call out the fringe but in doing so will sever too much support to carry the nomination. honestly if he wasnt a decorated veteran he'd be getting roasted by the far right. hes got the same secret juice that Tulsi had when discussing warhacks in 2020.
