If you had bothered to read you would realize I largely agree with you.

Wokeism serves to divide the people along racial, cultural and gender lines and divert political energy and activism away from class conflict or anything that could hurt the corporations' bottom line. If woke virtue signalling keeps the "leftist" activists happy or distracted, corporations are more than willing to put up with some inconsequential anger from conservatives.

Except it really doesn't keep them quiet. If it did the token gestures in the early 90's would have stopped the #metoo movement from ever taking hold. These things happen periodically, and if there isn't real change nobody really gives a shit about their token gestures.

I didn't say that "corporate American going 'woke'" is a smart strategy or will be successful in the long run - I just explained where I think they're coming from.

Anyway, I think we both agree that corporations positioning themselves as woke is mostly just for show and not reflective of sincere beliefs or values.

I'm more of a wake and bake than a woke guy.



You should hear Mr. T talk about his mohawk and chains, it is pretty intense. He goes into wearing the hair of the Mandenko Warriors, an african tribe that inspires him, wearing big gold chains because his people always wore chains but his price is way higher now, and that he named himself Mr. T after coming home from Vietnam and being called boy. Something alone the lines of "Mr is now the first thing a person calls me, not boy". To me a true ubermensch.

Wait, are you talking about Gretchen? Faust part I was finished in 1805 and published in 1808. This was a time when the industrialization in Germany had barely picked up pace at all (it only really took off after the Napoleonic Wars).
I don't think that this event, or any part of Faust I, was intended to be a criticism of the industrializing society and the corresponding rise of modern capitalism.

Faust II (published in 1832) of course played to a lot of these themes, in particular the "vanity" (in the sense of transience) of the modern, proto-capitalist society. But at least at first glance, seeing an arc between these parts of Faust and events from Faust I looks like overinterpretation/retcon to me.

I'm sure he heard of Descartes, Hume, Kant, etc, The Wealth of Nations, and he knew the feudal world he described in his early story of Gretchen and the village, as he described as a place where social relations are fixed and nothing changes. We strongly disagree here. I believe he was a great futurist, which isn't something you seem to conceptualize by your post as you view creators as looking backward by rule when he was the first in a lineage of German and later French writers looking backward and forward.
