I just did baseball and basketball with friends and kids in the neighborhood on school grounds which was free cept for the equipment. We used one bat, a tennis ball and barehands for baseball cuz broke.

It sounds like you were in competitive leagues?

The grocery bit still seems crazy to me but ill see when i get there.

Yes I played rec league, spring league and played competitive in the provincial league the same time. I down hill skied in the winter and in the summer I was an avid slalom water skier.

Mom slaughtered chickens and dad worked climbing telephone poles, i would have to imagine that outside their mortgage forcing savings they would have put nothing away during the time I was born until I started working in my teens.

No daycare costs though since I just got off the bus at an old ladies place and helped her. Daycare here though is now 750 per month for the low end.

I certainly didn't have nice things like the popular group but I did a ton of stuff athletics wise and dad was a jack of all trades so I had a skidoo from the dump and an ATV that we retrieved out a lake. My parents also never travelled even a single time until I left the house, just no money for it. I had never left my own province outside one school trip until I was 23.

When theyre pissing and shitting all the time my brother has easily dropped close to $1,000 on diapers in the year. Its so easy to get him Christmas gifts now.

Where's i'm sure hes dropping cash left and right and its a newborn.

So It's been well understood for a while that the govt pays you to have babies but i never knew exactly how the math works out and just started tinkering with a few of these online calculators.

If you're working a 30k job in canada, it seems like ramping up your skills to get an 80k job has the same impact on your monthly income after taxes as pumping out 5 kids.

Feel like im getting ripped off here 🤔

Wow 5 kids that's an impressive carbon footprint, the way it's going I guess pretty soon people have to pay tax per kid instead of receiving government support.

Yeah but then you have 5 kids eating a good chunk of that money.

Kids are an investment though. Raise them right and they will be able to help you later in life.

I doubt parents ever get more out of their kids than they put in, from a financial perspective. If you've lived your life the right way you won't need that and will leave a good chunk for your children.

The other obvious item when you have that many kids is you are likely to significantly sacrifice your career progression. So while it might be comparable to an 80K salary, you just significantly handicapped your chances of accelerating into a six figure position.

Food, sports, gas, other after school activities, clothing.

I easily eat $500 dollars of groceries per month and I ate more as a growing teen id bet. I bet my mother spent 100 dollars a week easy on gas driving us around and that was at 60 cents a liter. I played sports 6 days a week a times and my brother 3-4. That's before going to friends houses.

My parents made me walk or bike.
I played soccer and was responsible to get myself to games and practices.
I ate a lot of pasta.

No way I cost 10K a year when I was a kid lmfao.

I always thought competitive leagues and skiing were for rich people's kids. Surprised to hear normal people even try though i guess its possible if you don't do vacations. Did you have your own room or was it shared with your brother?

Back on topic just asked a friend of mine who just got through his sons first year and he said it was about $6k spread out over the year for a 0-1 year old. Mind you they are well off.

You're lucky you're not in America. It would be 6k just for the delivery.

bro maintaining kids has a long list of expenditures including damages and accidents. The returns are just not worth it Ive ran the numbers.

unless you are breeding them right they only give returns after 30. Remember cashflow must cover debt services

Nah a gear pass for skiing and lift ticket early bird special used to be 200 a year which isn't bad. You would never find that price now day. Competitive sports leagues certainly are not just for the wealthy. None of those things were the cost though again its gasoline and wear and tare on your vehicle.

Looking at stats the average kid 1-18 runs 235k which is fairly on par with what I mentioned.
