The fact that the sum of the percentages does not add up to 100 should tell you that respondents were not forced to pick one of these two; they were polled on their trust in both BLM and in law enforcement independently from one another. For a media article, the trends in trust for both groups was then juxtaposed.

How does this make the police look good? A third of the society they are supposed to be policing think they are corrupt.

You are the one who claimed that public opinion of the police was dismal. It is not. It's not great, but it's not horrible either, and more importantly, it had been growing in recent months.

If you're erecting a planned security fence in an area where protests had been ongoing, you don't do it during the day. You do it overnight or very early in the morning.
