I'd say there are definitely no go areas in Marseille. At least for average policing activities.
That city is so divided and youth unemployment is super high.

It's inevitable. These groups don't want to assimilate and never had the intention to do so. They're also much different in values from previous immigrant waves from eastern Europe who are much more secular and in most cases just come to host countries for economic reasons and have little to no friction in assimilating.
They still want to cover their women head to toe, they still want to stab anyone that dares speak out against Islam or is a homo. These are just incongruent values with french libertine values.
It's happened and will continue to happen because it's about money. It doesn't matter if it's France, UK, Sweden or w.e. The rich, the corporates want cheap labor, and bringing 20-30-year-old people largely uneducated from Africa & ME is great. Government is also 'for' this because they need a fresh taxable populace considering Europe is very old.
This is the nexus of the situation. Political parties waver to corporations by guaranteeing cheap labour and weak unions.
Thatcher crushed the unions. Miners, railway and shipyard workers.
Paved the way for corporate circle jerking to take root in the UK.
I imagine France is similar, although they have historically high migration from north african countries.
They recently passed a law banning under 16's from wearing bhurkas in public/schools. Which to me, is ironic considering the legal age of sexual consent is 15. And that was only passed into law last month!
Interesting to claim to be a free and secular country, whilst controlling what children of particular faiths wear.
Its difficult to see a solution coming from government. Having lots of low payed or unemployed non-assimilated citizens is a great way to ruin your society. But it's a great way to secure political funding from corps.
