this is the reasoning I use with Christians who claim that 'homosexuality is a sin'. If they can selectively ignore many other passages of the Bible, why can't they just ignore the anti-gay stuff as well?

It's so easy and obvious. If they did that, they'd be doing their religion a huge favor in terms of sustainability and acceptance.

Why would God create gays if homosexuality is a sin? That's a special kind of stupid way to think lol.

Bible doesn't mention homosexuality at all. King James had opinions about it.

the passage wasnt there to help men stay happy in marriage back then

it was to keep decadent values from destroying societies and to keep women at home pregnant and breeding more laborers\warriors for the state\nation\kingdom etc
when you understand the usefulness of mass religion to keep empires intact, it makes alot more sense

take a look at middle eastern countries
you dont have women cheating and house wrecking then leaving their spouse and taking the kids house dog etc with her
cause theyd just cut her ears and nose off way before it went that far

fall of rome 2.0

You present a good point.

First of all bible was not written by God. It may have been inspired and certainly a long line of translation and interpretations have scewed the original texts there is no way to tell. Thirdly if you believe bible on literal basis then you are lost my friend truly.

If God wanted something he would either make it impossible to not be so or made some very clear instructions that would be updated/translated and directly communicated without an obscurity of ancient texts that are highly debated and outdated

Ask yourself who is Timothy? What's his involvement?

Paul was writing to Timothy, instructing him how to build the church... Paul was a bit sexist.

Catholic dude did an AMA on Reddit today. Totally dodged every inconvenient question. Refused to dive into any significant issues because "I can't respond thoroughly in the comment box". The top like 20 posts were "When will the catholic church hold abusers responsible?" and "When we look at this and this and this and this, and this, it's clear that the bible is a political document written for the time. And you've written that we can't take the political sections literally. So why should we take anything divine as fact?"

Was a huge embarrasment lol. Got called out by basically everybody for not answering anything.

Best part? The AMA specifically asked for questions from atheists.

the catholic church is just arrogant enough to think they'd be asked questions they could answer with bland "we just need to have faith" answers. catholics are the worst kind of christains. baptists hold that they cant be held responsible for sin once saved, which i find insane, but catholics are worse. they think taking communion washes away all sin, including the deeply judgmental way they look at fellow parishioners in the service itself. at my local church when we attend with family on holidays 1/2 of the church brings coats to grab communion and just files out. usually there's 2 hymns, a scripture reading, and closing thoughts afterwards that they just skip out on.

Catholicism is the one true faith. Your argument is invalid.

That makes no sense because as a Catholic you must be in a state of grace to receive communion, and committing a mortal sin typically deprives you of being in a state of grace.

Catholicism is among the most hardcore denominations, if you're abiding by what the church actually teaches. The list of grave sins is plentiful, and unlike most Protestants, we can't just ask for forgiveness from God to get back in a state of grace(unless it's an extenuating circumstance). We have to confess to a priest.

1. mortal sin aside most catholics i meet are the most judgmental people ever. a mountain of such small sins can stack as high as 1 mortal sin to me.

2. most lie to themselves about being in a state of grace, and just selfishly want to think they're heaven bound

3. the catholic church here has MAYBE 1% of its congregation come in for confession
