So out of 121 "mass shootings", 3 of them were in that area, or 2.5%, which contains about 3.5 million people (Denver + Boulder metropolitan areas), or a little over 1% of the total U.S. population. So it's about twice as likely that there will be a mass shooting.

Doesn't seem to be particularly out of the ordinary. Larger areas with more people will naturally have more violence since one of the major determining factors for violence is density.
