Marx was right: class conflict is the principal contradiction. During the industrial era, from the mid-1800s to the 1970s, material class conflict was indeed the main cleavage in (Western) politics. Since the shift toward a post-industrial, knowledge-based information society, this class conflict is no longer waged primarily on the economic front, it is increasingly fought on the cultural and social front. Unfortunately, these kinds of non-material cleavages have become so salient that they distract from the still very relevant and urgent economic issues. This is, of course, no coincidence - divisions by race, gender, habitus and so on are deliberately fostered and reinforced to protect the profits of the one percenters.

Therefore, my grievance is the crushing preponderance of identity issues these days which is just a distraction from what the real conflict should be: the 99% vs the 1%.

In many ways, yes, they are used as a way to control people. The average person wouldn't care at all about trans rights if propaganda wasn't pumped out against them. Gay rights would have been the same. Civil rights was used for a very long time to keep the classes separate. We have a lot of cases where the black workers, who were treated worse than their white counterparts, went on strike and shut down a factory and the net result was a raise for everybody, not just the blacks who went on strike.

Another example are rednecks in the reconstruction era South. After the civil war, a lot of left-wing legislation was passed which improved the conditions for all working- or lower-class persons in the South, for example better schools, voting rights for poor people and so on. Keep in mind that poor whites were often times not treated much better than the black slaves in the antebellum South. When reconstruction collapsed and blacks were thrust back into quasi-slaverly-like conditions during the Jim Crow era, the southern working-class whites reaped the benefits of the political change that the blacks had fought for...

There should be no reason I shouldn’t be able to become president. But there are a lot and that’s not fair

I agree, the price of advertising is ridiculous when you compare the average joes savings to Joe Biden or Donald Trump. It seems impossible the average joe might be able to compete
