I didnt say it will make Democrats look good, I said they hope it will make Republicans look bad. If there's a school shooting between the time this bill (inevitably) fails in Congress and election day, they can point to the bill and argue "see, we told you so, this would not have happened if the evil obstructionist moronic [

But yeah, I agree that it's a bad strategic choice for Democrats and classic overreach. Opposing this bill will close the ranks of a roiled up GOP and remind wavering conservatives who are on the fence due to Jan 6/Trump/impeachment of what's at stake when Democrats are given control. And while stuff like an assault weapon ban has majority support in polls, I really dont think the same will hold true for a public firearms registry or expensive and mandatory insurance.
