I don't think you appreciate how deep the shorts are. The shorts have to buy back every single share of GME and then another 20-50%. Even at the current levels of elevated activity they would have to buy every single share traded across something like 4 full days.
Somebody might end up bag holding, but the vast majority is going to have plenty of time to make it out at a massive profit.
The only way that doesn't happen is if a chain of bankruptcies basically destroy the whole market, at which point they would just take that as a win honestly.
