Putin is quite skilled at maintaining power. The Russian population is risk adverse after the collapse in the 90s and the subsequent stability after Putin seized power. The likelihood of him losing power is therefore quite small, he has an enormous support base and complete control over the oligarchs and media.

That said, it is indicative of the challenges which will plague his eventual successor. Like Xi Jinping, he's going to find it very difficult to ever step down. He can't ensure his own safety, and his successors are unlikely to inherit his cult of personality or the banked goodwill of "rescuing" Russia from the Yeltsin years.

Edit: Further to the point, dictators lose power when they either fail to act decisively in the face of domestic unrest (e.g. The Shah and the revolution) or when the domestic forces are completely arrayed against them. Putin has a durable support base, and no one thinks he has scruples about crushing protests and arresting dissidents.

as for your strange personal angle, the EU's eastern expansions are actually one of my main criticisms of it (as i think it significantly destabilised the union financially and also ideologically) - something i repeatedly mentioned in this very forum btw. that is, however, a different topic entirely.

BTW if you're against the EU expansion East than you certainly understand the russians and you also know why they take this stance, they will never give up sevastopol it's simple as that. That EU never realized this is baffling
