They shouldnt support policies which drive people into euthanasia though. She was 90, yes, but according to the article, she was still healthy (by the standards of a 90 y/o) and had family who visits her regularly.

Anyway, we shouldnt blow one single case out of proportion. Nonetheless, isolation, loneliness and the accompanying mental decline among nursing home residents is an issue that decision makers must keep in mind when they're weighing the pros and cons of lockdown measures.

healthy for 90 means living in almost constant pain and the torture of being unable to do pretty much anything at all.

That's just not true, not if you state it with such sweeping generality.

Exceptions dont disprove a rule.

90 year olds in almost all cases ive ever seen are more afraid of death than wanting of life. I spent a summer cooking at a nursing home, none of those people are happy. In part due to lack of communication with their families, even pre-covid most people just let their elderly fade in those places with a weekly 20 min phonecall to make them feel better. But more due to a serious lack of physical ability, dwindling reflexes, constant brain fog, and an ever present fear of death and the unknown that lies beyond.

Most 90 year olds who were still in (relatively) good health that I knew were still enjoying their life. In my experience, it's those with debilitating ailments or serious long-term illness who have lost their will to live.

so that's like what? 1 in 100?

maybe Germany is different, and the memories of the smell of burnt hair keeps them feeling young at heart.

6 out of the 15 or so 90+ year olds that I knew personally. So yes, of course the majority of people that age are not in good health anymore. But I dont think that these cases are super rare either, or that there is generally no more will to live among those who still are in decent health.

I see no reason why your anecdotal evidence should be more or less close to the actual truth than mine.
