Wheres the $$ in paying writers for three years only to pulp their books instead of releasing them? There's nothing economical about having a team of veteran writers and overseers to produce media and then just scuttle it after its ready to ship. The bottom line profits only come from WotC making the cynical calculation that the potential political controversy from the SJWs on twitter attacking them for the umpteenth time could cost them more business than the book series would bring in, so its in their interests to preemptively self-censor to the extreme.
or in other words, get woke, go broke
If that's the case then they will lay in the bed they make. Honestly when I heard about the Orc = Evil is racist thing it honestly stopped me in my tracks a little and really made me think about the black and whiteness of all the fantasy books I've read and RPGs I've played.
Some of my favorite parts of the LoTR were from the viewpoint of the Uruk Hai. I don't know how many troll/ogre/orc warriors/shaman I have named Grishnakh in various games lol.
Honestly it was one of the first philosophical statements to ever come out of this SJW movement since its inception. Real talk, with SJW ideology, which is pathos pathos pathos, this is a lot more logos and ethos which is much more respectable of a claim.
You know that D&D had full rights to use Cthulhu in its property, they had a very old agreement with Arkham house as long as Chaosium could use some limited D&D rules in their full fledged Call of Cthulhu game. TSR (now WoTC) quit publishing it because it was the stuff of existential nightmares and their market is toward children and they had a very bad rep at the time because of allegations of demon worship and whatnot. My dad didn't want me to play D&D because it was Satanic. Its funny looking back, because it is very wholesome.
These dudes are always walking the line of public relations. It sucks that they are trying to can another great Dragonlance saga without any real justification. In the articles I read which were superficial at best said that WoTC were not clear at all in why, they just seemed to turn on the writers and put a shithead in charge and sabotage the effort.
I wonder if there is some real problematic stuff in there. Draconian society was pretty brutal, but as a young person reading it, they were a foreign monster race hatched in clusters from dragon eggs or whatever to serve as reliable and powerful sapien servants (stratified by color) so shoot them and stab them lol.
