I'm not necessarily opposed to cancelling student debt but that doesn't fix the underlying issues we have with our education system. People shouldn't feel forced to go to college in the first place in order to do a job that doesn't require said degree. Companies only require a college degree because it proves that you're not a fuck-up. That's pretty much it.

Vast majority of entry level jobs expect a degree and 2-3 years experience and if you want a real shot of getting hired you probably need to know someone within the company

I want to say I remember you talking about being in a post graduate program. What are/did you study?

I'm currently in graduate school for a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology. My cohort is supposed to be graduating this May, but the Board of Behavioral Sciences (which is the regulatory body for therapists) has a requirement that you have to complete 150 hours of counseling sessions in order to graduate whichever program you're in. Covid-19 interrupted our efforts to do this last semester because trainee therapists aren't supposed to do telehealth and the school was not setup for that transition. So, all of us are incredibly behind on hours and they're already letting us know that it's likely many of us will have to postpone our graduation.

I'm doing everything in my power to make sure that mine doesn't get postponed, because I don't know how they expect people to simply continue another semester financially. I've already taken massive loans out for the original timeline, and taking out more just to finish my hours sounds shitty.

Idk man, I've seen PhD graduates (in tech!) who are literally only good at writing papers. They'd be useless in pretty much any company.

Education doesn't mean as much as employers like to believe. Most of all it's an easy filter but it's not necessarily a great one.

How much have you had to take out so far? That’s interesting I hope everything works out for you

Canceling debt not the solution. Does it address the cost of education going forward?

Giving tax credits and ensuring payment for student debt is 100% tax deductible are the initial steps in the right direction

And ofc ensuring those who recently paid off their loans (In past X years, whatever is arbitrarily decided) get those same tax benefits

> 50K in total including undergrad. Parents had no financial means to contribute towards college, and this is after a series of state grants, AmeriCorps education awards, and I applied for 100+ individual scholarships this past year. Made it to semi-finals on some of them, but ultimately never was never awarded anything.

College is just so prohibitively expensive. Without loans I would have never been able to go at all.
