They absolutely can in the general sense. If you create a hostile work environment for things you say to employees, then you should expect to be terminated. In most cases, people are simply hunted down for something obnoxious. Now, if the HR department, through some sort of internal impetus, wants to track people down who attend white supremacist rallies, that's fine. If people on the internet do the dirty work for them, that's not fine.
Here is an example of cancel culture that I've experienced. The company I work for had a handful of individuals try and get someone removed from our website for something they said 3 years ago. These people honestly had nothing else better to do than to target an individual who happens to use our service. Like I said, these people should have their hands broken with a hammer for their first offense. They should lose their tongues for a second offense.
