Hong Kong's independence will of course die before the official expiration date in 2049. But it doesnt has to happen so soon.
I really wonder why the Chinese government has decided to go for this move now. Is this a sign of weakness/nervousness, or is it a sign of strength?
In 1998 when we gave HK back, it made up roughly 15% of China GDP.
It now accounts for less than 3% of China's GDP.
Therefore, it follows that China don't need to appease HK like they used to. If China taking more control means Hong Kong is no longer the financial hub of Asia and there's capital flight, it won't hurt them massively.
As for how this affects China's reputation, it's already in the gutter from being authoritarian, imprisoning Uyghurs and, more recently, unleashing COVID-19 on the world. They've got nothing to lose, that's why they're going on the offensive with their diplomats starting beef across the world.
