People should choose to take reasonable measures to protect their health and the health of their neighbors. Not because they are forced to do so, but because they obtained a minimum amount of education on the subject and because they possess a minimum amount of compassion for their community.
see, that's the problem: too many americans are too easily manipulated by a couple of talking heads on their favourite propaganda channel into defying common sense and reason.
their oligarchs have spent billions of dollars to promote that weird myth of a uniquely american, individualistic culture, that not only prevented them from pushing for basic achievements of modern societies (like healthcare, worker protection, and a meaningful political voice), but to actually reject all that with a not insignificant amount of ignorant pride, and deluding themselves into believing that's what 'freedomâ„¢' is - while being exploited and mistreated by their ruling class like in no other modern western nation.
that strange 'it's just not in our nature' reasoning is something i encountered literally every single time in serious conversations, no matter if it was about healthcare or common sense gun control.
and that's really strange given how america's probably greatest contribution to the world, freeing it from the terror of fascism in the 20th century, was an act of extreme selflessness and sacrifice.
how does that no completely debunk that idiotic notion, that their corrupt(ed) leaders have been feeding them ever since, to make them proudly vote against their own best interest? how is that not proof of their ability for compassion?
i really wonder how much longer it will take for americans to finally wake and rise up. not against measures to contain a virus we don't have a vaccine against yet, but against those that use that to keep the country divided, against those that make average americans fight amongst each other over issues like which community deserves the most lead in their drinking water, which county should have the leaky oil pipelines in their backyards, and who deserves to be killed or locked away by police - instead of turning their attention to who is actually responsible for those problems, who benefits from them, and how they got away with it for so long.
judging by this year, probably never. if 2020 has a theme, a motto, it's definitely "proud ignorance".
