Why does that matter? Is this not a democracy? Who cares what they think? If you don't want to listen to them, you really don't have to.

We might not be millionaires, but we're pretty out of touch too. We're on a gaming forum FFS. What sort of demographics are attracted to that?

Ok?

No one is saying they can't do it. He wasn't trying to wake people up or change the world. He was making fun of celebrities right to their face and it was pretty funny to see their reactions.

He didnt expose anything lol

he certainly exposed, as if it needed to be, that most can't take jokes.

even tho most of the jokes represented half truths at best it's clear the audience wanted a feel good moment more akin to the Andy Sandberg hosted event a few years back. with hollywood making more and more progressive and inclusive movies they must be at least a bit shocked they still have a white, pandering, casting couch reputation.

i like ricky gervais. his speech was hilarious and edgy, but tbf it's not like those actors are the ones making the decision to set up sweat shops in china. i loved tim apple, errr... tim cook's face though.

it was obvious that right wing snowflakes would love it, because most celebrities tend to speak out against conservative stances on topics like climate change, racism, voting rights, and immigration - but even with that in mind i had a good laugh, especially when you consider that they made a hyper opinionated b-list celebrity their president...

generally not a big fan of the 'shut up and dribble' angle, and i'm pretty sure that ricky gervais wouldn't pass that purity test himself, but again, he was putting on a show and being edgy, so it's all good imo.

He wasn't saying they set up the sweat shops. His point was they always lecture people on social and political issues yet work for and support companies that have the sweat shops. He wasn't saying shut up and dribble. Just don't be a hypocrite when preaching values and morals to the world while ignoring horrible issues because you profit off them.

He always makes very controversial jokes at these things though and he obviously did it for the laughs.

Easier said than done. Am I to boycott every company that disagrees with my values? Do you know how much effort that would take? Ultimately, if the value that I get from a product exceeds whatever ethical issues presented, I'm going to use that unethical product. That doesn't mean I don't care about those issues, it's just that I don't give enough of a shit. We all make this calculation so it's nothing to be ashamed about. Everyone has a price where they'd support something unethical. EVERYONE.

The nice thing though is that if enough people give a tiny little bit of a shit, you can actually enact positive change. The fact that celebrities have so much influence actually gives them MORE reason to talk about these issues because they could sway people.

Everyone does have that right to ignore these issues for money.
They are still hypocrites for lecturing people while ignoring those issues for money.

I'm all for celebrities helping for good causes. No one is arguing that celebrities helping with things like the Australian fires or other natural disasters is a bad thing.
